Graduate Internship Program
Internship information:
- Setting: Outpatient/Sports Ortho
- Supervision type: Small Group with a ratio of 2-4 students to 1 Clinical Instructor
- Learning Model:
- Longitudinal: Create your own caseload and follow same caseload of patients from initial examination and throughout their plan of care
- Team-based/collaborative model: Collaborate examination/evaluation process and patient plan of care with Dr. Kim and other Student PTs
- Patient Population Notes:
- Conditions treated:
- Acute/chronic orthopedic conditions
- Post-surgical including rotator cuff, ACL, meniscus, TKA/THA, leg ORIF, achilles reconstruction most common
- Sports related injuries including overuse injuries, sprain/strains
- Frequent Sports encountered: basketball, soccer, baseball, cricket, racquet sports (badminton, tennis, pickleball), running, skiing, powerlifting. Have had occasional speed skater, ice hockey, football, fence
- Neurological conditions: Parkinsons most common, occasionally Multiple Sclerosis
- Geriatric: Gait and Balance disorders leading to falls
- Pediatric: Orthopedic conditions only, age 6+; rare
- Patient age range:
- 20% is 30 years and younger
- 60% of population is 30-60 years old
- 20% is 60+ years old
- Conditions treated:
- About clinical instructor: Dr. Kimberly Huey; OCS certified since 2019, SCS candidate 2023. Collaborative/supportive clinical education model promoting autonomy and evidence based clinical decision making. Heavy emphasis on following clinical practice guidelines, criterion based progressions, strength and conditioning principles
- Clinic located in: Fremont, California approximately 1.5 hour from San Francisco, 45-60 minutes from Oakland, 15-20 minutes from San Jose (given typical traffic patterns).
- Pre-placement requirements: At least 1+ year experience as PT aide with exercise instruction experience or personal trainer experience; strong MSK/ortho performance in school; completed at least 1 full time outpatient ortho rotation
